Practical next steps
Understand your bill
Start with the property, then the household, then the payment schedule.
1. Check the property band
Your band is a valuation category, not the current market price of your home. Find the recorded band through GOV.UK for England and Wales or the Scottish Assessors Association. Follow the official challenge process if you think it is wrong.
2. Check what the quoted charge includes
English figures on this site include the shares of the bodies charging council tax in an area, with parish precepts averaged. Scottish figures exclude water and sewerage. Welsh Band D figures include average community and police charges. Your exact bill can differ because of location, discounts or premiums. Read the coverage guide.
3. Check discounts and reductions
A household with only one counted adult may qualify for a 25% discount. Some people are disregarded when counting adults. Check the official eligibility guidance and apply through your council.
Separate support may apply to low-income households, students or disabled residents. These are different schemes with different conditions; this site does not decide eligibility.

4. Check the payment schedule
The annual charge and an instalment are different things. Our monthly equivalents are arithmetic illustrations, not a repayment schedule. Check the due dates on your bill and official payment guidance.
5. If paying is difficult
Contact your billing council promptly to discuss support and payments. Use the official council finder. Do not send personal bills or financial details to this site.
