About
About UK Council Tax
UK Council Tax is an independent reference site. It is not a council or government service and does not issue bills, take payments or decide council tax bands.
UK Council Tax focuses on the amount charged, how it changes, and who receives each part. Coverage includes 296 English billing authorities, all 32 Scottish councils and Band D averages for 22 Welsh councils. Coverage differs by nation.
Published data and illustrative scenarios are kept distinct. The local precept tool begins with Burnley's complete 2026/27 schedule. Wider council information belongs on UK Councils; contextual links connect to other public data projects.
The rules the site keeps
- Every observed charge comes from an official table. Calculations and illustrative scenarios state their assumptions and sources.
- A figure the source does not hold is not shown. A missing figure means a missing section, never a zero or an estimate.
- Councils are compared only where every council has the same complete official year, as in the MHCLG council tax tables, and only within the same class of council.
- No person is named anywhere on the site.
- The site states what a table says and the rule that applies. It says nothing about why a council did what it did.
How each figure is read and calculated is on the methodology page, and every table used is listed on the sources page.
